Rahs new logo

Rah at the moment is applying for jobs and sending her CV out to production companies around Christchurch looking for a job in the film industry. We both decided that we should create a cooperate identity for herself just to add a bit more of a professional touch . This is the logo that I came up with for her, and this will be put on top of her CV and we will look at getting business cards printed out in the near future. Hopefully you will see alot more of this logo

The Yellow Owl

Due to gail forced winds The Yellow Owl did not take flight in the weekend, we hope to reschedule flights to later on this week.

New Briefs

First brief we got given for this year was a CD/DVD package which must hold two discs and have a booklet at least four pages big. For mine I chose to do a double Dvd package for a Richard Pryor best of. I chose this so I could put a bit of a retro look on it, because I really like the new retro look movie posters that are coming out at the moment. Once I get the package back from marking I will put up a photo of it so you can see how it all goes together.
The second brief we got was a one colour one page magazine advert which we had to complete in two days. I'm quite happy with the result, I took both the images of the shoes and backround.

The making of "The Yellow Owl"

Kite day is tomorrow, and I finally got around to making it the other night and illustrated it last night. It is made of some branches I found outside that had fell off the punga tree crape paper and wool. Haven't tried it out to see if it flies at all yet. So tomorrow could be quite interesting.

Thanks Mama Sue!!!

A big thankyou to Sue Dickson for donating $30 for a Holga lens, its all ordered and on its way down to us. You are the best mother in law a boy could ask for. Soon as we get it we will have to come down to Timaru to take your Holga styled photo!

Thankyou so much!

Life after course

I have just applied for my first Design job today. As course is coming to an end in April I thought I should get my A into G and start looking for work. So onto to Trademe I went and found a Sign designer and Vinyl applicator job out at Riccarton. I was really excited to see this cause I used to do a bit Signwriting for my job in Levin, and quite enjoyed doing it. But I never really had much of a say in the design of the signs, and didnt understand to much about the design either. So with a bit of experience in sign writing and studying design for the last year I have a slight confidence in at least getting an interview for the job. It would be such a relief if I was to get this job so I could go straight from graduating from Natcoll to a full time design job and not have to compete with the rest of my classmates for what little design jobs are out there.

Fingers crossed!

To Holga or not to Holga?

I have found a lens on trademe that will take Holga style photos, which give a cool old school vintage look to them. There are also attachments that you can buy that fit on the Holga lens for fisheye and Macro. I know the lens is only $30 and I should just shut up and buy the thing but $30 is proving to be a really big sum of cash to part with at the moment. Hence the urgency for a part time job. Maybe we will see some Holga shoots on this blog in the near future.

PS. Donations are very welcome, and I will repay you by taking your photo with the brand new lens! Chance of a lifetime I say.

Kite day

Kite day is coming up and Rah an I are wanting to make our own kite for it. We missed out on it last year as we only just moved to Christchurch a week earlier. It is held out at Brighton beach and hundreds of people attend it, so we cant wait to join them. Hopfully there will be heaps of pics of our kite building and flying in the next couple of weeks!

Photo of the week Part:5

Didnt take too many photos this week, but this one I took as I was on my to course. After the earthquake there has been alot of building repairs and building demolishing going on. I caught this fellow soaking up the sun while his mates were working hard on the crane a couple of buildings down.

2010

So 2010 was a huge year for both Rah and I, moving to a new city. Me moving from Manawatu for the first time ever and going back to study after a good 5-6 years working in Levin. All though there have been the usual ups and downs that we all have to go through last year was a big huge step in the right direction for me. So i thourght that I could just list a few things that I have learnt in the year 2010 as I think I learnt so much last year I kinda need to remind myself.

*Moving from one Island to another is rather easy
*Adobe creative suite CS4
*How to use a Mac
*Hiace vans are fun
*Hiace vans dont last too long
*Prostitutes work every night of the week and have really loud fights in the middle of the night
*Christchurch is a very cultured and artsie city
*How to be a poor student
*I like illustrating
*Its very hard to get out of a conversation with homeless alcoholics
*The Earthquake house in Te Papa is quite accurate
*Potatoes dont need to be watered
*How to make a banana cake
*Cameras are real fun
*I can keep a Blog regularly updated
*The libary is a handy thing to have
*I can still Iceskate like blades of glory
*Dr Oz is a wealth of knowledge
*I still can't afford to join a gym
*Orana park has more Lions there then Lion King the movie
*Growing your own vegies is very satisfying
*Antique stuff is very interesting stuff

So yeah, I am sure there is heaps more to add to that. But this just proves how eventful and fun 2010 was. So excited to see what 2011 has install and how many more little learning experiences will come about.

Photo of the week Part:4

We were looking after Blue (Rahs family dog.) for a week. And I could'nt really let it go without a wee bit of a photoshoot. He did real well to hold off from eating the biscuits while I was setting this up, and he modelled well once I was set. He's my boy Blue!!!

Dinosaurs in Christchurch

Our last brief before end of year was to do a calendar of whatever theme you wanted, so naturally my theme was Dinosaurs in Christchurch. Still needs a bit of work done on it before end of year portfolio tho.

Blue China for Xmas

I am quite proud of myself with the present that I got Rah this year. When I first saw it in the antique store around the corner from course I thought it was a ring but actually found out that it was brooch. But after talking to the antique store owner he said that I could quite easily get it made into a ring without damaging or devaluing it at all. Im happy how it turned out it looks awesome as a ring and Rah loves it. Thumbs up for me!

Photo of the week Part:3

I just love everything about this photo, it is by far the best photo I took from our new years photoshoot.

Welcoming 2011

Rah and I welcomed in the new year by walking around Christchurch city taking photos of each other playing with street lights, flashes, shutter speeds and apertures. It was heaps of fun and we both came out with some wicked results.
